P-38J Lockheed Lightning's of the 429th Fighter Squadron, 474th Fighter Group
By Aviation Artist Randy Green
P-38J Lockheed Lightning's of the 429th Fighter Squadron (474th Fighter Group) overfly "Schloss Neuschwanstein" (New Swanstone Castle) a dramatic Romanesque fortress with soaring fairy-tale towers. It is situated on an Alpine ridge above the Pollät Gorge. Built by Bavarian King Ludwig II in 1869 as his monument to the lost culture and kingship of the middle-ages. His obsession with building and living in his medieval fantasies would eventually prove to be his downfall.
